Residents in Colden Common have been sowing seeds aplenty in time to mark the anniversary of the First World War.

Volunteers from around the village came together to sow poppy seeds in time to commemorate the war at the sensory garden - an area specifically cleared to mark the occasion. The small brick-walled area is now surrounded by bright red poppies, as are a number of other locations across the village.

Maureen Rees, one of the organisers, said "The Community Association made a decision at the December Forum meeting to plant poppies as part of our WWI commemoration. We applied for a grant from Hampshire County Council to purchase seeds and to put on an exhibition, which will take place from August 4th - 9th. The Gardening club, Rainbow Guides, Brownies, Methodist Church members, Ladies' group representatives, the WI and a member from the Greening Colden Common group all took part, as well as individuals and community  centre staff and volunteers." "Steve, the parish council grounds technician, dug gorse, brambles and weeds out of the raised beds on the green to enable the Rainbow Guides and Brownies to sew their seeds."
